What is NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness)?

Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) refers to the rights of individuals—particularly student-athletes—to earn money from their personal brand. This includes using:

  • Name – How you’re identified (e.g., signing autographs, promoting products).

  • Image – Your visual likeness (e.g., in photos, advertisements, or video content).

  • Likeness – Personal characteristics, such as voice, signature, or mannerisms.

Since 2021, student-athletes in the United States have been allowed to profit from these rights without losing their collegiate eligibility. This means they can now:

  • Sign endorsement deals with companies or brands

  • Promote products on social media

  • Offer training or coaching sessions

  • Sell merchandise or NFTs

  • Host sports camps or events

However, these activities must follow NCAA, school, and state-specific regulations, and cannot be used to directly pay athletes for their athletic performance or recruitment.
